Beijing claims to be holding a Taiwanese soldier who was recently rescued by mainland Chinese coastguards off the coast of Fujian province. Chinese coastguards rescued two people after they called for help when their small fishing boat lost power in Weitou Bay on March 18. Chinese authorities have accused a Taiwanese man, identified by the surname Hu, of “intentionally concealing” his identity as an active serviceman. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s defence ministry detected 36 Chinese military aircraft and six naval ships operating around the self-ruled island over a span of 24 hours.
