According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha will start on September 29 and last until October 14.

Pitru Paksha, or Shradh, is considered an important period for the Hindus, as they believe that during this time the departed ancestors of the family return to earth in the form of animals. These ancestors then bless their families. During this period, Hindus offer prayers to their ancestors in the form of Shradh, Pind Daan and Tarpan.

According to the Hindu calendar, Pitru Paksha will start on September 29 this year and last until October 14. During this time, some of the portions of the food cooked are set aside for animals and birds. This ritual is called Panchbali Bhog and it is believed that the ancestors are satisfied with the food eaten by some specific animals and birds. Astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma has informed the people about these creatures in an interview with News18.

1. Crow- Crows are linked to the elements of air. It is believed that if the crow eats the food set aside for the forefathers, then it has been accepted by our ancestors. According to the beliefs, the ancestors get satiated and bless their descendants.

2. Cow- Cows are linked to the symbol of the earth element. In Sanatan Dharma, it is considered the most revered animal, and a portion of the food prepared during Pitru Paksha is taken out for it. The bhog should not be thrown in front of the cow and it would be better if you fed it with your own hands.

3. Dog- The dog is considered a symbol of the water element. Some chunks of the food are fed to the dogs during the Pitru Paksha. The ancestors feel happy and they bless you for a happy life.

4. Divine Powers- Offering food to the gods also has special significance during Devta Pitru Paksha. The deities symbolise the sky element. A portion of the food prepared during Pitru Paksha is also taken out for the Gods.

5. Ants- On the day of Shradh, the fifth bhog is offered to ants, that are a symbol of hard work and collectivism.
