Are you considering starting a family? Although the prospect of pregnancy can bring immense happiness, the journey to conceive can be a lengthy and challenging one for numerous couples. Statistics indicate that approximately 12-15 per cent of couples encounter difficulties with infertility, which means they don’t achieve pregnancy after a year of trying. This situation can lead to feelings of frustration and despair. But here is a test that can help you to become a parent.

All about urine ovulation test

Urine ovulation tests are readily accessible and can be found at most pharmacies. Typically, they are sold in boxes containing five to seven test sticks. If your menstrual cycle generally spans 28 days, it’s advisable to start testing on the 11th day after the commencement of your last period or approximately three to five days before your anticipated day of ovulation, taking into account your cycle length.

A positive result on the test, often indicated by a specific colour change on the stick, typically suggests that ovulation is expected to happen within the next 24 to 36 hours. It’s important to refer to the instructions provided with the specific test to ensure you interpret the results correctly.

Understanding the fertility window

The period during which conception can happen, known as the fertility window, spans approximately five days before ovulation to several hours after it. Various methods can assist in determining when ovulation is imminent. These methods encompass ultrasound, a urine test to gauge hormone levels linked to the menstrual cycle and fertility awareness techniques like monitoring cervical mucus or utilizing a period tracking app.

In a recent comprehensive study, a Cochrane review- an esteemed type of review within the scientific community- examined seven randomised controlled trials to determine whether timed intercourse using these ovulation tracking methods has a beneficial effect on achieving conception.

Studies by experts

“The results suggest that if the likelihood of pregnancy after intercourse without using urine ovulation tests is 18 per cent, the likelihood following timed intercourse with urinary ovulation detection would fall within the range of 20 per cent to 28 per cent. However, it remains unclear whether this method affects the time it takes to achieve pregnancy,” as quoted by the authors in Fatherly Company.

Tatjana Gibbons, a doctoral student at Oxford University and the lead author of the study expressed in a press release, “The discovery that a simple and readily available urine test can enhance a couple’s chances of successful conception is quite promising, as it can empower couples with greater control over their fertility journey and potentially reduce the need for infertility investigations and treatments.”

It’s worth noting that some of the studies incorporated into the review were financially supported by the manufacturers of urine ovulation tests. As a result, it’s prudent to approach the findings with a degree of scepticism and consider potential biases in the research.
