Emma Coronel, wife of drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, set for release in Los Angeles after pleading guilty to drug-related charges.

The US Bureau of Prisons said Emma Coronel, the wife of imprisoned Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, will be freed in Los Angeles on Wednesday, news agency Reuters said.

She was arrested in 2021 on drug trafficking charges. Emma Coronel was born in the US. The 34-year-old was initially sentenced to three years in prison.

Emma pleaded guilty to three counts of helping the Sinaloa drug cartel, including conspiracy to launder money and distribute illegal drugs and engaging in financial dealings, according to the report by Reuters.

Emma Coronel Aispuro said she conspired to distribute cocaine, meth, heroin and marijuana for import into the US.

She also said that she played the role of a courier between Guzman, who led the cartel, and other organization members. This was when Guzman was held in Mexico’s Altiplano prison following his arrest in 2014.

The sentencing judge said Coronel accepted her responsibility quickly and agreed to forfeit wealth worth $1.5 million earned from her criminal activities to the US government. Her three-year sentence was then reduced.

The US Bureau of Prisons said Emma would be released from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles but did not provide any more details.

Emma was previously lodged from a federal prison in Texas, to a halfway house in Long Beach, California. A Bureau of Prisons official said that it is typical for inmates who have exhibited good behaviour in a federal prison to be relocated to a halfway house, months before their release.

Her husband, one of the world’s most notorious drug traffickers, is serving a life sentence in the US. He was extradited there in 2017 after he escaped from Mexican maximum-security prisons.

He once dug a mile-long tunnel from his cell to escape prison.

It remains unclear if Emma faces charges for drug trafficking or other crimes inside Mexico. She was also handed a sentence of two years of supervised release. She and Guzman have two daughters.

Emma was a former beauty queen and married Guzman when she was 18 years old.
