Jaylen Brown’s participation in the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk competition did not go as per the expectations. Following one of his attempts, the Boston Celtics star had to digest boos from fans at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Sunday. It was due to a hand gesture that Brown pulled out after completing his second dunk in the elimination round. As soon as the ball swished through the net, the 27-year-old shooting guard covered his eyes in a celebratory move, which is iconic to Dee Brown. The Boston Celtics legend once did the same while converting a slam on the way to winning the dunk contest back in 1991.
Jaylen Brown called in his franchise superstar Jayson Tatum and YouTuber Kai Cenat to assist in that particular attempt. Tatum was given the task of tossing the ball upwards so that it could find the hands of a leaping Brown. Cenat, on the other hand, was seated beneath the rim and was recording the dunk on his phone. Once everything was set up, Brown dashed down the lane and dove over the seated 5′ 3″ Cenat to complete the dunk.
After he landed on the court, the three-time NBA All-Star imitated the trademark celebration of Dee Brown. The timing of both gestures, however, was not the same. The former basketball player had covered his eyes in the air, while Jaylen Brown did that after everything was done.
The crowd present at the arena started to boo Brown after he was awarded 48 points for that dunk that helped him secure a place in the final of the competition. Fans, who were watching the dunk contest from their home, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts about the event. Here’s how they have reacted:

Besides Jaylen Brown, Miami Heat’s Jaime Jaquez Jr., New York Knicks’ Jacob Toppin and G-League player Mac McClung featured at the slam dunk event. While Brown was tipped to be the top contender for the title, McClung beat him by one point in the final, becoming the fifth player in history to win the competition for the second consecutive time.
