The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2024 theme is Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is celebrated annually on April 6 with an aim to recognise the importance of sports and physical activity in our personal lives and communities around the world. Sports are an important component of society as it keeps us active, competitive, and healthy. Additionally, playing sports can increase confidence and teach valuable life lessons.

The United Nations (UN) has long recognised sport’s power and universality, using it to unite individuals and groups by supporting sports for development, participating in events on a global and grassroots level, and developing its sports-related campaigns and initiatives.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2024: Theme

This year, the theme for the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is “Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies”.

On April 4, an event at United Nations Headquarters in New York will commemorate International Day by focusing on how prominent sporting entities collaborate to have a good influence on people and the places in which they operate. It will bring together members of the global sporting community, including those involved in the United Nations Football for the Goals initiative, to share best practices, discuss challenges, and seek collaborative opportunities to drive positive social change and contribute to global efforts for sustainable development and peace.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2024: History

On August 23, 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted Resolution 67/296, declaring April 6 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. On September 18, 2013, the resolution report was released. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) contributed to the foundation of this special day.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was declared under previous UN resolutions that sought to highlight and promote events such as the International Year of Sport and the Olympic Ideal, the Olympic Truce, and the Olympic Ideal, as well as to help usher in a more peaceful world through the use of sports.
