At least 2.2 million litres of wine gushed through the streets of Portuguese town Levira after an accident at the distillery.
Residents of Levira, a small town in Portugal, were left stunned after two holding tanks containing nearly 2.2 million litres (600,000 gallons) of red wine burst, sending red wines into the streets and towards a waterway.

Videos of the incident have gone viral on the internet where the fermented grape juice can be seen gushing through the streets and down a steep hill in Lourenço de Bairro, home to 2,000 residents.
The region was on the brink of an environmental disaster due to mishap in the winery. Moments after the accident, the spill triggered an environmental alert.
The New York Post in a report said that the amount of wine discharged due to the accident could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
“We deeply regret the incident that occurred this morning involving the bursting of 2 suitable-to-consumption DOC wine storage units,” Levira Distillery said in a Facebook post, apologising for the trouble caused to the town’s residents.
“Although the incident did not cause any injuries, we want to express our sincere concern for the damage caused in general in Levira, and in particular, to homes,” they further added.
They also thanked the Anadia Municipal Council, Civil Protection, Volunteer Firefighters of Anadia and GNR SEPNA, which is the environmental police, for their swift response.
The Anadia Fire Department made efforts to divert the flow of wine to ensure that the waters of the nearby Certima River did not get contaminated. The soil soaked with wine will be taken to a special treatment plant.
“We take full responsibility for the costs associated with damage cleanup and repair, with crews available to do it immediately. We’re committed to resolving this situation as soon as possible,” Levira Distilleries further added, asking residents to keep records of the damage caused via videos and photographs so that they can coordinate their efforts with authorities in resolving those cases.
