A US Congressional report has accused China of being complicit in America’s fentanyl epidemic. The report blames the ruling Chinese Communist Party for subsidising the manufacturing and export of illicit fentanyl materials. The report says China is encouraging the export of precursor chemicals that are used to make the synthetic painkiller through tax rebates.The claims come after US president Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to tackle the fentanyl problem in November 2023. The two also had a follow-up conversation on actions taken over a phone call earlier this month. Despite the deal, the report found there was “no evidence of new actions” by China to crack down on the flow of fentanyl materials.
