Kyiv’s troops pulled back from the embattled eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka after gruelling months of fighting against Russian forces. Ukraine’s new commander-in-chief General Oleksandr Syrsky said he ordered the withdrawal “to move to defence on more advantageous lines”. General Oleksandr Tarnavsky earlier reported that Russia was “throwing all reserves at its assault” on the industrial city. On February 16, the deputy commander of the 3rd Assault Brigade said Kyiv’s troops were holding out against the onslaught of nearly 15,000 Russian soldiers. Maksym Zhorin, the brigade’s deputy commander, said Russian warplanes were dropping 60-80 bombs a day and launching assaults with armour and infantry.
