Slovakia has elected nationalist-left government candidate Peter Pellegrini as the new president of the country. The close ally of populist Prime Minister Robert Fico defeated pro-western Ivan Korčok, a former diplomat, with 53% of the vote. Pellegrini will succeed Zuzana Čaputová, the country’s first female head of state and a staunch backer of Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Speaking in Bratislava, Pellegrini vowed “to ensure that Slovakia remains on the side of peace and not on the side of war”. Experts warned that Pellegrini “will loosen ties” with Slovakia’s allies and partners in NATO and the EU with “weaker support for Ukraine and leaning towards Russia”.
