English footballing legend, David Beckham talked about the infamous red card he received against Argentina in the World Cup.
Legendary English footballer David Beckham reflected upon the much-talked-about 1998 World Cup red card moment in the new Netflix documentary. While speaking in a video interview with The Associated Press, Beckham revealed the plethora of emotions that he went through during the documentary. “This whole process has been like an emotional rollercoaster”, he said.
During the interview, Beckham delved back into the hateful treatment he incurred after conceding a red card against Argentina at the World Cup. “I hadn’t actually watched it and I hadn’t watched the interviews and what people said about me after”, Beckham said. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder added that the moment had left him shocked.

England and Argentina face each other in their first knockout game of the 1998 World Cup on July 1. The game began with Argentina’s Gabriel Batistuta converting a penalty in the sixth minute. However, England equalised four minutes later as Alan Shearer returned the favour. Soon, Michael Owen was able to earn a lead for England before Argentina’s Javier Zanetti equalised during the closing stages of the first half.
The drama unfolded in the second half when David Beckham was pushed to the ground by the then-Argentina captain Diego Simeone. The Englishman was furious as he landed a kick to the back of Simeone’s leg, resulting in the red card. Having gone one man down in the crucial game, England’s World Cup dreams were crushed eventually. Beckham was deemed the villain as England went on to lose the game 4-3 on penalties.
In his Netflix documentary series, David Beckham spoke extensively about that period. He recalled the hatred that he received from the English fans and how he was regularly condemned in the British tabloids.
He also talked about the incident when his effigy was hung from a noose outside a London pub. Beckham had expected the backlash but his awareness did not make things easy for him. “I knew it was bad at the time, but going over that whole thing was quite a tough one”, he said to AP.
The backlash did not just follow Beckham on the football pitch. Every time he went out, he was often stopped by the fans. People even at times reportedly spat on his car’s window.
