East Taiwan was struck by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the early morning hours of Wednesday (local time). The earthquake prompted tsunami warnings across Taiwan, southern Japan and the Philippines.
Large landslides have been reported in Taiwan following the earthquake along with widespread internet outages. The temblor has left 87,000 homes without electricity.
Earlier, the earthquake was thought to have been 7.4-magnitude on the Richter Scale, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), but it was later revised to 7.7-magnitude. The epicentre of the earthquake was 18 kilometres south of Taiwan’s Hualien City at a depth of 34.8 km.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency put the magnitude at 7.5.
