Shiv Nadar’s donations, showing a significant increase of 76 per cent compared to 2022, have primarily focused on the fields of arts and culture.

Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL Technologies, has once again secured the first position as the foremost Indian philanthropist, making annual donations of Rs 2,042 crore. This marks the third time in five years that the 78-year-old has been on the top of the list.

Nadar’s donations, showing a significant increase of 76 per cent compared to 2022, have primarily focused on the fields of arts and culture. His contributions encompass support for various initiatives such as VidyaGyan, Shiv Nadar University, Shiv Nadar School, Shiksha Initiative and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, as reported by the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023, which was unveiled on Thursday.

Azim Premji, the founder of Wipro, secured the second position by making donations of ₹1,774 crore, primarily directed towards education-related causes. Notably, this marks a remarkable increase of 267 per cent compared to his previous contributions. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries Limited, and Kumar Mangalam Birla of the Aditya Birla Group claimed the third and fourth positions on the list, with donations amounting to Rs 376 crore and Rs 287 crore respectively.

The list ranks individuals who have donated Rs 5 crore or more in cash or cash equivalents from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023.

In the updated rankings, Gautam Adani, the chairman of the Adani Group, has moved up two positions from 2022 to secure the fifth spot, contributing Rs 285 crore to educational causes. The Bajaj family experienced a significant jump of 11 places to claim the sixth position on the list, with donations amounting to Rs 264 crore, primarily directed towards the education sector.

Anil Agarwal and his family from the Vedanta Group donated Rs 241 crore annually to charitable causes, with a focus on the healthcare sector. The Anil Agarwal Foundation supports the Nand Ghar project, which was launched in 2015 and aims to transform the lives of seven crore children and two crore women across 13.7 lakh anganwadis in India.

In addition to Nandan Nilekani, three other individuals from Infosys were recognised on the philanthropy list, including Kris Gopalakrishnan, K Dinesh and SD Shibulal. They made contributions of Rs 93 crore, Rs 47 crore and Rs 35 crore respectively.

This year’s philanthropy list features a total of 24 individuals, with the top 10 including prominent names such as Nadar, Premji, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, Rohini Nilekani, Zerodha co-founders Nithin and Nikhil Kamath, Mindtree co-founder Subroto Bagchi and his spouse Susmita, as well as Larsen & Toubro Chairman AM Naik. These individuals have made significant contributions to various charitable causes.
