Reliance Jio is set to disrupt the PC market with its entry into the “cloud-PC” space. The company is planning to unveil a cloud PC laptop soon and is expected to be priced around Rs 15,000, according to an Economic Times report.
The report also mentions that Jio is already in talks with several laptop manufacturers like HP, Acer and Lenovo and the product is aimed to arrive in the next few months.
Jio Cloud PCs are expected to bring down ownership costs significantly
The report also mentions that the cloud PC is expected to make owning laptops for consumers easy and more affordable. Compared to a regular laptop that costs around Rs 50,000, the Jio cloud PCs are expected to be relatively more affordable.
Jio has referred to the cloud PCs as “dumb terminal” which offload the storage and processing to the Jio Cloud. So, it will offer high-performance computing without the need of expensive hardware.
Jio cloud PC to get a subscription model
The report mentions that Jio has already begun the trail for the cloud PC on a HP Chromebook device and Jio is expected to introduce a monthly subscription model for Cloud PC. That said, the pricing for the same hasn’t been announced yet. We expect this to happen alongside the official announcement.
Jio has also clarified that the cloud PC software will support various devices including existing PCs, smart TVs and other computing devices.
A Jio official explained to Economic Times “The cost of a laptop depends on its hardware like memory, processing power, chipset, etc. What we are doing is, we are stripping all this, and the whole processing of the laptop will happen at the back end in the Jio cloud.”
This marks Jio’s second foray into the laptop market after the launch of the 4G-powered JioBook in July. Unlike its predecessor, the new cloud PC is expected to run on various operating systems, including Windows.
What this means for users
Jio’s affordable cloud PC aims to revolutionise computing for users, slashing upfront costs to around Rs 15,000 and offering high-speed services through the Jio cloud. With a monthly subscription model, adaptability to existing devices and a focus on shared family usage, Jio aims to democratise computing, making it accessible, cost-effective, and versatile.
