Railway bridge near Samara, Russia, rocked by blast. No casualties reported. Incident linked to recent attacks on Russian infrastructure

A railway bridge near the Russian city of Samara has been rocked by a blast, the RIA news agency reported on Monday. Located on the Volga River in the country’s southwest, the Samara region is one of Russia’s heavy industry hubs.

The incident was caused by an explosive device, Reuters reported, citing emergency services and TASS. Russia has in recent months reported a series of attacks on its industrial and logistics infrastructure which it blamed on Ukraine. So far, no casualties have been reported.

However, traffic over the bridge has been suspended, the Russian Railways said, describing the incident as “illegal interference”. Five long-distance trains have been delayed near Chapayevsk in the Volga region of Samara after the explosive, according to Russian media.

“On March 4, 2024, passenger train service was halted as unauthorized persons interfered in the operation of the Zvezda-Chapayevsk railway in the Samara Region,” Kuibyshevskaya Railway told TASS. Preliminary reports said the fence and bridge supports were damaged near the river bank.
