OnePlus and Realme planning to quit the TV segment in India?
OnePlus and Realme seem to be quitting at a time when the TV segment is booming. So why do they want to leave?
OnePlus and Realme have decided to end their focus on the television market in India and will stop making as well selling their TVs in the country. The update comes via a report from Times of India this week, which suggests the company was not pleased with the cost of running the business and operating the after sales needed to keep the products healthy.
The report quotes sources saying, both OnePlus and Realme will move out of the TV category which includes the production side as well.
They will continue to be an ever-present figure in the smartphone business. But the news of OnePlus and Realme reportedly exiting the TV segment means Xiaomi has a clear leadership in the market, followed by Samsung and other brands like Vu, TCL and more to follow. It is surprising to see OnePlus quit the segment but Realme was rather lining up this decision going by its recent changes at helm.
The company lost Madhav Sheth to HTech Group which marked Honor’s comeback in the Indian market in a new avatar. Since then, Realme has gone quiet on its business at large, and very few product launches of note.
OnePlus launched its foldable product in the country this month, and is an active part of the tablet segment with the OnePlus Pad and OnePlus Pad Go models. One would have assumed that OnePlus feels confident with its business prospects in the budget smart TV market but these developments suggest otherwise.
Having said that, if OnePlus and Realme do stop selling TVs in the country, what happens to their after-sale support for those who have bought TVs from these brands? If the report does come true then many people would be wondering about their decision to spend money on these brands and going into the future might prefer to stick with established brands like Samsung and Sony who have been around for decades and won’t just decide to shut shop to leave their customers in a spot.
