Nitish Kumar ‘Population Control’ Remark Row: The NCW has demanded strong action from the Bihar assembly speaker against the chief minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attacked the INDI alliance leaders for not taking a stand against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who recently made objectionable comments about women over the issue of population control.

While addressing a rally in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, PM Modi said Nitish Kumar should be ashamed of his words adding that he was defaming the nation.

“A big leader of the INDI alliance, ‘Ghamandiya Gathbandhan’ used indecent language for women inside the Assembly yesterday. They are not ashamed. No leader of the INDI alliance said a single word against it. People who think like this about women, can they do anything good for you?…” said Modi.

Nitish Kumar “Birth Control” Remark Controversy

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday landed himself in a controversy after he made a “sexist” and “vulgar” remark on women’s role in the population control process during his speech in the state assembly.

While addressing the legislators, which included some women leaders as well, Kumar went on to explain how women’s education contributes to population control. He was presenting the data of the latest caste census conducted by his government.

A video of Nitish Kumar’s statements in the legislative assembly went viral on social media in no time with the BJP attacking the JDU chief for making ‘derogatory’ remarks against women.

Meanwhile, Kumar has apologised for “derogatory” comments about the role of women’s education in population control made in the state Assembly.

“I apologise and I take back my words. If my words were wrong, I apologise. If anyone got hurt, I take them back,” he said.

“(My words) were not intended to hurt anybody. I have always maintained education is necessary for population control. I have also stood for women’s empowerment and women’s development.”

NCW Demands Strong Action Against Nitish Kumar

The NCW has demanded strong action from the Bihar assembly speaker against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his remarks in the Assembly on the importance of women’s education to control the population and demanded his apology.

In a letter to Bihar assembly speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said it strongly condemns and protests the use of such derogatory and vulgar statements made by persons holding responsible positions which shows extreme disrespect to women.

Therefore, given the above, I urge strong action against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his said statement must be expunged from the records, the NCW said in the letter.
