India-Canada Diplomatic row: EAM Jaishankar asked how other countries would react if they were in India’s position, with their diplomats, embassies, and citizens facing intimidation
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar broke silence on India suspending visas to Canadian citizens amid the ongoing diplomatic standoff over Khalistani extremist Nijjar’s killing and said it was necessary considering instances of violence on Indian diplomats and consulates.
He further added that Indian diplomats and officials were unable to continue with their work as there were threats of constant violence to them.
‘Majboori thi…humare diplomats, consulates ke khilaf hinsa ka prachar ho raha hai, kaise visa, office jane ka kam karenge, yeh law & order, Vienna convention ka issue hai,” Jaishanakar said while addressing Indian journalists in the US.
He further asked how other countries would react if they were in India’s position, with their diplomats, embassies, and citizens facing intimidation.
EAM also added that the Indian and Canadian governments will talk to each other and see how they resolve their differences over the death of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The minister, however, asserted that the larger issue of “permissiveness” must be flagged and addressed and said India was ready to look into the information related to Canada’s allegations of Indian agents’ “potential” involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia.
Jaishankar on Friday met US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and held a productive conversation with him on deepening bilateral defence cooperation, including in the co-production of defence articles, and exchanged perspectives on a variety of security issues. He also met Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
“Austin and Jaishankar discussed opportunities to deepen bilateral defence cooperation, including expanded defence industrial cooperation and co-production of defence articles; streamlined logistics procedures to enhance operational cooperation; and continued implementation of the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X),” said Pentagon’s Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh.
