What Security Measures are in Place for Phase 1 Polling?
Superintendent of Police from Manipur’s Imphal West said that security arrangements in his district have been met. He further said, “The place that I am standing in is also a sensitive location, we have deployed central paramilitary forces at sensitive locations. We have also deployed our commando teams and police personnel. Three layers of security have been covered by the Army, CRPF and state police…In relation to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, all the fringe areas have been covered. I think it will be perfectly fine. Police are taking all the necessary action for the safety of the public. For other vulnerable and critical polling stations, we have deployed central paramilitary forces. In other places, we armed police personnel in order to ensure free and fair elections.”
On preparations for the 2024 elections, Nagaland DGP, Rupin Sharma said, “Nagaland has one constituency for the Lok Sabha. We have deployed almost 20,000 personnel, which includes the district police, the Nagaland Armed police and IR battalions, and central armed police forces, also for the elections duty… By and large, the Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland are very peaceful. There are no major incidents which have been reported, especially the incidents about election campaigning or model code of conduct. Something will happen, keeps happening, but no major incidents have been reported. We expect that the polling will be peaceful throughout the state… The definition of criticality and vulnerability is as per the Election Commission laid down criteria, and the deployment is also as per that. Hopefully, we don’t expect anyone to be pressured either to vote or not to vote in those areas. Also, at the end of the day, if it is a voluntary process, I don’t think there is too much of a pressure on people to vote or not to vote.”
Ravindra Verma, SP from MP’s Sidhi said, “All the preparations have almost been completed and we have received the forces that are going to be deployed in polling booths and other duties. There are approximately 2,500 police personnel who will be deployed in polling booths and other duties. Rest all the checkpoints are also active. Seizure action is being taken continuously and almost all the preparations have been completed. All the polling centres have been divided into 2 categories, general polling centres and critical polling centres. CAPFs will be deployed at all the critical polling centres and arrangements for micro observers and webcasting are also being made at all the critical polling centres… Flag march action is being taken continuously through the in-charge and SDPs. We have completed flag march action in all the vulnerable areas and critical polling stations in all the police station areas and in the remaining areas too. Even today, a Flag March is being organized in the city, which will be taken out from all the legislative assemblies of the city, in which I will be present.”
