Pro-Khalistan elements attempt to heckle Indian Ambassador in New York Gurudwara amid Gurpurab; video sparks controversy on social media

Pro-Khalistan elements attempted to heckle India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, during his visit to a gurudwara in New York on the occasion of Guruprab. A video circulating on the internet shows Khalistani elements making remarks about their slain leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Sandhu visited the Guru Nanak Darbar in Long Island, New York and took part in the Guruprab celebrations there. This incident reportedly happened on the same day as Ambassador Sandhu was honoured at Guru Nanak Darbar in Long Island.

“Privileged to join the local Sangat, including from Afghanistan, at Guru Nanak Darbar of Long Island in celebrating Gurpurab- listened to Kirtan, spoke about Guru Nanak’s everlasting message of togetherness, unity, and equality, partook langar, and sought blessings for all,” the ambassador wrote on X after the visit.

After the video of the “heckling” incident went viral on social media, BJP National Spokesperson RP Singh said Khalistanies tried to heckle the Indian Ambassador with baseless questions. Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) alleged that there was a heckling incident towards Ambassador Sandhu at the Long Island Gurudwara. However, top government sources rejected the SFJ claims, denouncing them as inaccurate and fabricated.

“Himmat Singh who led the pro-Khalistanies at Hicksville Gurdwara in New York also accused ambassador Sandhu for India’s role in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was President of Surrey Gurdwara and the coordinator for Canadian Chapter of the Khalistan Referendum,” wrote BJP Spokesperson Singh on X.

The government sources emphasised the ambassador’s esteemed reputation within the Indian Sikh Community and said that SFJ was attempting to advance their agenda and garner financial support from Pakistan. There is no credible evidence supporting SFJ’s assertions of any disrespect towards Ambassador Sandhu by the local Sikh community.
