JEE Advanced 2023: IIT Seats Vacant Even After Six Rounds Of Counselling – News18

Students aspiring for engineering often prefer IITs and the JEE candidates study tirelessly day and night. Therefore, there is tough competition and very few applicants get a seat in top IITs while others have to try their luck next time. However, for the first time in five years, after six rounds of counselling by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), some undergraduate seats in IITs remain vacant.

According to reports, out of 17,385 seats across 23 IITs, 17,340 have been filled, with 3,422 female candidates. This means 45 seats are still vacant.

Looking at the data from the past five years, the number of allocated seats at the end of JoSAA has consistently been higher than the initially available seats. Last year, there were a total of 16,598 seats initially but the allocated seats were 16,635. Similarly, in 2022, there were 16,232 seats initially but after the sixth round of counselling, the allocated seats increased to 16,296.

Explaining the creation of additional seats, JEE Advanced 2023 Chairman Professor Biswupad Mandal mentioned that the number of allocated seats is usually higher than the original seats, according to a report by The Indian Express. Supernumerary seats are created during the admission process due to the tie situation for some seats, attracting more candidates’ applications. This leads to the displayed allocated seats in IITs exceeding the originally available seats.

However, some IIT branches may still have vacancies as this time, the difference between available and allocated seats indicates that post-pandemic, non-IIT options are becoming more attractive to students. In addition, some students decide not to participate in JoSAA counselling if they realise that they may not secure admission to their preferred course or IIT. Instead, they choose to get admission to non-IIT institutes.
