The match was held up due to the disturbances in the stands of the Rio de Janeiro-based stadium as sections of fans were seen exchanging blows when Brazil and Argentina had both lined up for their respective national anthems.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romando shared Argentine footballer Lisandro Martinez’s Instagram story after the World Cup qualifier drama in Brazil.

Argentina were scheduled to play their World Cup qualifier against Brazil at the iconic Marcana Stadium. However, the match saw an unforeseen delay of thirty minutes after the stadium erupted into a state of chaos due to an ugly brawl among fans in the stands.

Romano shared a screenshot of Martinez’s Instagram Story along with the caption on X. In his story, the Argentine wrote, “It’s a shame to see what Brazilian police are doing! So how can that be possible? How long do we have to see these scenes?! It’s always the same [in Brazil]”.

The current world champions Argentina were set to compete in Brazil according to the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers schedule. The international blockbuster was to be held at Maracana on November 22 at 6 am IST. It was the same stadium where Argentina ended their 28-year trophy drought by winning the Copa America on Brazilian soil.

Speaking of the game, the match was held up due to the disturbances in the stands of the Rio de Janeiro-based stadium. When Brazil and Argentina had both lined up for their respective national anthems, the camera turned towards the stands where a section of fans could be seen exchanging blows.

The footballers seemed to be in a state of shock after taking a look at the disturbing visuals. The scenes worsened when the police got involved as they resorted to batons to control the crowd. This didn’t go down too well with Argentine captain Lionel Messi who decided to have a few words with the officials before walking off the pitch with his teammates. The Argentine player re-emerged shortly after as the match began at 6:30 am IST. Despite all the drama, La Albiceleste were able to take the win on the night after Nicolas Otamendi gave his side the opening goal in the 63rd minute.

Martinez was seemingly quite upset with the display amongst fans in Brazil. He wasn’t happy with the treatment of the Argentine fans by the Brazilian authorities during the match. Lisandro is currently sidelined from both club and international football due to the aggravation of his foot injury that he suffered in April.

Manchester United released an official statement towards late September about the player’s condition. They didn’t mention the exact tenure of his recovery but said that it was likely going to be ‘an extended period’. “Everyone at Manchester United sends Lisandro our best wishes and looks forward to him coming back as soon as possible”, wrote their communications department.
