London witnesses major protest against alleged sexual violence by TMC leaders in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. Demonstrators demand justice and accountability

A major protest was held in London on Sunday against the incidents of sexual violence and assault allegedly perpetrated by Trinamool Congress (TMC) party leaders in West Bengal’s North 24-Parganas district.

In Sandeshkhali, several women have come forward with tales of sexual exploitation and abuse by TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his aides. The demonstrations in the UK capital were held in solidarity with the victims, which highlighted issues such as land grabbing, sexual assault, and gang rapes allegedly carried out by TMC leaders and associates.

Dozens of members of the Indian diaspora took part in protests in large numbers, emphasising their support for the cause of humanity. Protestors voiced their condemnation of the violence in Sandeshkhali, stressing that such incidents are antithetical to basic human values. The protests were directed against TMC’s absconding leader Shahjahan Sheikh, reflecting growing outrage over the reported injustices in West Bengal. Participants expressed solidarity with the victims and called for accountability for those responsible for the atrocities.

The riverine Sandeshkhali area, situated about 100 kilometres from Kolkata on the borders of the Sunderbans, has been witnessing protests since the first week of February over allegations of sexual atrocities and land grabs by local TMC leaders. One of the key accused Shahjahan has been evading authorities since a mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials, who had gone to search his premises in Sandeshkhali in connection with a corruption case, on January 5. Shiba Prasad Hajra and Uttam Sardar, considered close associates of Sheikh, were, however, arrested.
