Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took a swipe at All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday, after a video of him appreciating a beef shop owner went viral on social media.

In the video, Owaisi — during an election campaign in Hyderabad — was seen passing by a beef shop, where he stopped to greet the owner and appreciate him.

Rehan beef shop zindabad. Khairiyat hai bhai? Salaam alaikum. Kaatte raho (Long live Rehan beef shop. All well? Greetings. Keep butchering.),” Owaisi can be heard saying to the beef shop owner in the video.

Reacting to the video and Owaisi’s comments, Sitharaman said, “His (Owaisi’s) political statements are always indecent. I am not surprised that he passed such statements. His younger brother (Akbaruddin Owaisi) is an MLA. He is also an expert in giving such extreme statements,” she said, adding that “therefore I am not surprised.”

Earlier this week, Owaisi had taken a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party and said that they can take money in the form of electoral bonds from beef exporting firms but will not allow a meat trader to set up shop.

On Friday, Owaisi filed his nomination papers from the Hyderabad seat for the Lok Sabha elections. The constituency is AIMIM chief’s traditional bastion since 2004.

Among the 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana, Hyderabad will also go into the first phase polling of the Lok Sabha elections on May 13. The results for the polls are expected to be declared on June 4.
