EU leaders secured Hungarian PM Viktor Orban’s support for 50 bn euros ($55 bn) in financial aid to Ukraine, ending a months-long deadlock. In December 2023, Orban vetoed the financial aid package for Ukraine amid its war against Russia. Orban said he had secured guarantees that the money would be used “sensibly”, and that “Hungary’s money would not end up in Ukraine”. Orban has consistently impeded or diluted European Union (EU) decisions related to Ukraine, including sanctions against Russia.
