TikTok has been heavily criticised for its handling of hate speech around the Israel-Hamas war. To address the issue, TikTok has taken steps to strengthen its moderation practices, which aim to curb hate speech on the social media platform.
TikTok to automatically filter ‘reported’ comments
TikTok has introduced “Comment Care Mode” to automatically filter comments on videos. This feature filters out comments that are similar to the creator’s previously reported or deleted ones. Additionally, another feature helps to remove comments made by accounts that are not in the creator’s following or follower list.
To encourage the use of these tools, TikTok plans to prompt new users to use them after their first video upload. They also intend to set up a product beta testing program to receive feedback from creators.
A task force to address hate speech
TikTok has formed an anti-hate and discrimination task force, working with experts to identify and address hate trends proactively. They are improving the training of moderators and expanding managed creator communities to interfaith and marginalized groups, like Jewish, API, and LGBTQ+ communities.
TikTok is further planning to provide wider access to its research APIs to various civil society groups. These groups, such as the Anti-Defamation League, have been requesting this for years, so that they can gain a better understanding of the types of content on the platform.
To ensure community safety during the crisis, TikTok has taken several measures. They have established a command centre with a global team of 40,000 safety professionals to respond quickly. Additionally, they have improved automated systems to detect and remove violent content promptly.
The platform has also increased the number of Arabic and Hebrew-speaking moderators and provided more support for their well-being. TikTok is enforcing strict measures against violence, hate, and misinformation and removing violent content and accounts.
There are now opt-in screens for graphic content and temporary feature adjustments to prevent misuse. Furthermore, TikTok says that it has collaborated with law enforcement globally to ensure victim safety and engaged with industry and civil society experts for platform security and safety.”
Then, the platform further adds it has taken a strong stance against hate speech and antisemitism, removing all related content reported through its Community Partner Channel. TikTok removes hate speech before it is reported nine times out of ten. The conflict region saw 1.3 million videos removed between October 7 and November 30 due to their promotion of hate speech, terrorism, and misinformation.
