Arun Govil, BJP’s candidate from Meerut, stirs controversy as he heads to Mumbai post-elections. Allegations of “parachute politics” arise

Congress on Sunday accused actor-turned-politician Arun Govil of ‘parachute politics’ after the BJP Meerut candidate flew to Mumbai following the second phase of Lok Sabha elections.

“It is learnt that Arun Govil, who was the BJP candidate from Meerut, left for Mumbai the very next day after the elections were over. Perhaps he had difficulty staying among the public. This person was getting videography done inside the polling booth yesterday,” UP chief Ajay Rai wrote on social media platform X.

Parachute politics?

“Only God can save us from such a leader cum actor! By the way, this is the policy of most of the BJP leaders. They have no concern for the people and the ground. They only believe in parachute politics,” Rai added. The UP Congress chief made these allegations after Govil, in a now-deleted post, spoke about the “breach of trust” and “anger over the exposure of double-facedness.”

‘Election was completed’

Countering Congress allegations, Govil, who famously portrayed the role of Ram in the Ramayana TV series, said, “On Holi, on 24 March, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced my name and on their instructions, I reached among you on 26 March. I stayed with you for 1 month and campaigned for the election with your support. The election was completed. I am very grateful to you for your love, support and respect.”

“Now, on the instructions of the party, I am in Mumbai to fulfill my responsibilities here. The party is planning to send me to other areas for election campaigning. As soon as this process is completed, I will be amongst you and along with the people of Meerut and the respected workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party, I will begin efforts to take Meerut to greater heights under the leadership of respected Shri Narendra Modi,” he added.
