A while back, Google confirmed that it will make Android Auto more useful for users by adding more features and productivity apps to the car’s infotainment system to offer a safe environment while driving and stay connected to the world.
Following that announcement, Google has now dropped important details on changes and new features coming to Android Auto via an official blog post.
Improved productivity for Android Auto
Google has confirmed that video conferencing apps like WebEx by Cisco and Zoom are now available on Android Auto. This, although, is limited to audio-only, but it is more than sufficient for users to take meetings while driving. Also, the company has integrated the mute/unmute function with the car’s infotainment system for seamless meeting experience. Users will be able to seamlessly join scheduled meetings and conference calls from the car’s display.
Entertainment apps for Android Auto
To keep users entertained while parked, Android Auto is expanding on entertainment apps in cars that come with Google integration. Prime Video is now available via Google Play for select Renault, Polestar and Volvo cars. The company has confirmed that more cars will be added to the list soon.
In addition to this, Google has also introduced Vivaldi web browser support to Android Auto which is Chromium-based browser. The browser offers a wide range of features and allow users to browse the internet when parked.
Apart from these, Android Auto now also has The Weather Channel app which can be downloaded from Google Play on cars with Google integration.
Ability to unlock cars with phone
Google is also expanding support for digital car keys, allowing you to unlock, lock, and start your car using your smartphone. Users can also share digital keys wirelessly with friends and family on both Android and iOS devices. Right now, the feature is limited to European countries for select cars from Hyundai, Genesis and Kia in US, Canada and Korea. Also, the feature is currently supported in Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23+.
