They came, they saw, they persisted and ultimately, they conquered. Manchester City marked a stellar 3-1 comeback win against rivals Manchester United in the Premier League last night, forcing United to ask more questions about their own club’s progress this season.
City now lie one point behind table-toppers Liverpool as the race for the Premier League title heats up, whilst United are left stranded at sixth, as the loss dealt a massive blow to their hopes of making it into the top four to secure a Champions League spot next season.
The more debilitating aspect of United’s loss would be the fact that despite their otherwise questionable performances throughout the season, the Red Devils mustered one of their most composed performances against their rivals only to ultimately fall flat.
United midfielder and skipper Bruno Fernandes put up a fairly fashionable performance last night, after having to deal with questions of consistency and commitment to the club.
He took to the media post-match to expound on the repercussions of their losses and emphasised on the importance of finding their form in order to reach their targets this season.
“Every time you don’t win a game it is a damage at this club,” Fernandes said. “We know what this club demands and we want to win the games we are involved in.
“We didn’t get the three points today but there’s still a long way to go. We know it is not everything in our hands because other teams have to lose points but we have to do our job.”
United, despite their brave showing, still surely have a long way to go indeed. A mind-numbing statistic from last night’s encounter shows that City had more shots attempted (27) than the entirety of the percentage of possession that United held throughout the match (26%).
