New rules are coming into effect in Europe this week, giving people more control over their phones and computers. This is part of a law called the Digital Markets Act (DMA) that targets big tech companies. These set of European Union regulations that classify six tech companies as “gatekeepers” — Amazon, Apple, Google parent Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok owner ByteDance — come into effect starting March 7.
Some 22 services, from operating systems to messenger apps and social media platforms, will reportedly be in the DMA’s crosshairs. They include Google services like Maps, YouTube, the Chrome browser and Android operating system, plus Amazon’s Marketplace and Apple’s Safari Browser and iOS. Meta’s Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp are included as well as Microsoft’s Windows and LinkedIn.
What if companies don’t follow DMA
The companies face the threat of hefty fines worth up to 20% of their annual global revenue for repeated violations — which could amount to billions of dollars — or even a breakup of their businesses for “systematic infringements.”

More choices: Users will be able to pick your default search engine and browser on both Android and iPhone. There will also be new app stores for iPhones.
More control over data: Users will have more options to control how their data is used for advertising. For example, they can stop Google from sharing their data across its services.
Fairer competition: Tech companies can’t give preference to their own services in search results anymore. For instance, Google Search cannot priortise Google Flights over other travel sites.
Messaging interoperability: Messaging apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp might allow users to chat with each other in the future.
