Popular micro-blogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has imposed a record ban on 234,584 accounts in India from September 26 to October 25. Majority of these bans were due to the promotion of child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity.

The Elon Musk-run social media platform also removed 2,755 accounts for promoting terrorism in the country. In total, X took action against 237,339 accounts during this reporting period in India.

In its monthly report, complying with the new IT Rules, 2021, X revealed that it addressed 3,229 user complaints in India during the specified time frame through its grievance redressal mechanisms. Additionally, the platform processed 78 grievances related to appealing account suspensions.

According to the company, after reviewing the specifics of the situations, they overturned 43 account suspensions, while the rest remain suspended. Moreover, X received 53 requests concerning general account-related questions in this reporting period.

The majority of complaints from India focused on hateful conduct (1,424), followed by abuse/harassment (917), child sexual exploitation (366), and sensitive adult content (231).

According to the new IT Rules 2021, major digital and social media platforms with over 5 million users are required to release monthly compliance reports. During the period from August 26 to September 25, X, a micro-blogging platform, banned a total of 557,764 accounts in India.

Additionally, the platform removed 1,675 accounts for promoting terrorism in the country.

X has also taken action against more than 325,000 pieces of content that violated its terms of service, including violent speech and hateful conduct, amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Meanwhile, X recently announced two fresh subscription options for the users on its platform. One of these is the Premium+ tier, available at approximately $16 per month, which includes all the tools and features offered by the platform, minus the ads.

The premium ad-free experience is exclusive to users accessing the platform through a web browser. For those who prefer a more budget-friendly option, there’s the basic tier priced at $3 per month; however, it does not offer an ad-free experience.
