In 2020, there was a time when the world came to know about Apple’s plans about self-driving car. At that time, Elon Musk claimed that he approached Apple CEO Tim Cook to explore an opportunity for the iPhone maker to acquire Tesla but couldn’t connect with the top executive. He revisited the old post and provided a new insight around the claims.
A handle on X – ‘Tesla Owners Silicon Valley’ (followed by Musk and IT minister Rajeev Chanrasekhar) – dug up an old post in which the Tesla CEO talked about how his company cars already have the technology that Apple is reportedly looking to incorporate in its self-driving cars.
“Elon Musk wanted Tim Cook to purchase Tesla back in the darkest days of Model 3 production. Tim says he never got the call. What do you think?,” the handle posed a question.
Replying to this, Musk said, “I requested a call and was refused,” without detailing on who refused his call.

Previous posts by Musk suggest that Cook refused a meeting with Musk.
“During the darkest days of the Model 3 program, I reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla (for 1/10 of our current value). He refused to take the meeting,” Musk claimed. In 2017 and 2018, Tesla struggled with the production of the Model 3 sedan but the company bounced back.
He said during a media interview in 2018 that his electric car startup was close to death within “single-digit weeks”.
What Tim Cook said
About five months later Cook said in an interview that he never spoke to Musk about buying his failed electric car business a couple of years back.
“You know, I’ve never spoken to Elon, although I have great admiration and respect for the company he’s built,” Cook was quoted as saying.
Apple’s electric car plans
Recently, it was reported that the latest estimate for the launch of the vehicle is now at least 2028. Reportedly, Apple initially planned to release an advanced self-driving car for highways by 2026. But the company shifted its focus to creating an electric vehicle, much like Tesla, with basic driver-assistance features. Apple has never publicly commented on any plans to make cars.
