The MEA said that the mortal remains of the two Indians who passed away in Russia will be back in India at the end of this week.

The external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Friday said that the government is making every effort to ensure the early discharge of Indians stuck in Russia. Jaiswal said that twenty Indians stuck there approached the ministry of external affairs.

“We are pressing very hard with the Russian authorities for early discharge of our people who are stuck there. Last time we told you that there were 20 people there who approached us,” Jaiswal said.

Jaiswal also said that the mortal remains of the two Indians who died there will reach India at the end of this week. “We also have two people who passed away. The paperwork of their mortal remains has been done. The funeral agency, which we have engaged, has handed over the bodies,” he said.

Hemil Mangukiya, 23, from Gujarat and Mohamed Asfan, 30, who hailed from Hyderabad, died in Russia.

Earlier this month, Indians stuck in Russia released a video seeking government intervention for their release. In the video, the seven men are seen wearing army fatigues inside a room with a closed window.

Six men are seen huddled in a corner as another explains the situation they find themselves in. Several men from Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Telangana find themselves trapped in Russia after they were lured there by scamsters.

“We are in touch with the family. We are also in touch with the Russian authorities. And hopefully, we will have the mortal remains in India by the end of this week, that is on Sunday or thereabout. Hopefully, on the 16th or 17th, they’ll be here and then handed over to the family,” he further added.

Jaiswal also said that India expects Russia and Ukraine to resolve the conflict by diplomatic means and urged both parties to head to the table for discussions. “We have been very consistent in our position on the Russia Ukraine war. We continue to encourage a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy which is our standard position,” he said.

“We remain open to engaging in all ways and means that could help achieve this objective,” he further added.
