Education Ministry Declares IIMC as Deemed-to-be University – News18

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication, IIMC has been declared by the Ministry of Education, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC), as a deemed to be university under distinct category. The declaration extends to IIMC New Delhi as well as its five regional campuses in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha). With the deemed-to-be university status, IIMC can now offer degrees, including doctoral degrees.

“On the advice of the UGC, the Ministry of Education, in exercise of powers conferred under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, hereby declares Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi along with its five regional campuses at Jammu (J-K), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizwal (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala) and Dhenkanal (Odisha) as an Institution deemed to be a University under distinct category,” the official statement reads.

The institute extended its gratitude to the education ministry for declaring it a deemed-to-be university. “A big thanks to the Ministry of Education for declaring IIMC New Delhi and its five regional centres as a deemed to be university. IIMC is committed to giving its best to promote education, training, and research in mass communication,” IIMC posted on microblogging site X.

The institute was established on August 17, 1965, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. IIMC is also the training academy for Indian Information Service (IIS) officers. The idea of ​​giving deemed university status to IIMC is not new. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting approved this scheme in 2016.
