The Italian had left Serie A for Ligue 1 side PSG on a free transfer back in the summer of 2021, which did not sit well with the club’s supporters who made their feelings known as they tossed fake money at the shot stopper during PSG’s game in Milan.

Gianluigi Donnaruma didn’t receive the warmest of welcomes on his return to the San Siro on a Champions League night. The Italian goalkeeper had left Serie A for Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer back in the summer of 2021.

The contract offered by the Parisians was far more lucrative than his previous deal with AC Milan. The transfer, however, did not sit quite too well with the Italian Club’s supporters and it was evident in their Champions League game against PSG.

PSG took on AC Milan in their fourth Champions League group game of the 2023/24 season at the San Siro today. Despite dominating the game with more than 70 per cent of the possession, the Parisians failed to secure a win on the night. They did take an early lead thanks to a ninth-minute finish from Milan Skriniar but weren’t able to hold on to it for long. Donnarumma and his side later conceded two goals from Rafael Leao and Oliver Giroud for a 2-1 defeat to the Italian side.

Before making a move to PSG, Donnarumma had been a regular feature at the San Siro. He rose through the ranks at the Italian Club’s academy before making his debut in 2015. At the time, he became the second-youngest goalkeeper to debut in Serie A. Since then the goalkeeper racked up 251 appearances for the club while keeping 88 clean sheets in those matches. He also won the Supercoppa Italiana in 2016, his first and only piece of silverware with AC Milan. Donnaurmma was widely regarded as one of the brightest prospects for up-and-coming goalkeepers in the world.

Swedish football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic had once labelled the Italian as ‘the best in the world’. While speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport back in 2021, as quoted by Football Italia, Zlatan said, “He [Donnaruma] is the best in the world. He could have become Mr Milan, like Maldini, but it takes two to tango. I would tell him to stay in Milan until the end.”

In 2021, Donnarumma decided that it was in his best interest to leave AC Milan for Paris. He was a part of the club’s historic 2021 transfer saga where he was signed alongside the likes of Argentine legend Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi and Gigi Wijnaldum. Despite having a massively talented squad on paper, the French side failed in successive editions of the Champions League. They were knocked out by Real Madrid in the 2021/22 season before being washed away by Bayern Munich in the following season.
