A doctor who appeared on an American news broadcast channel said her cancer diagnosis post major surgery does not stack up from a medical point of view.

A doctor questioned Princess of Wales Kate Middleton’s shock announcement that she is undergoing treatment for cancer. Jonathan Reiner, MD, professor of medicine at The George Washington University in Washington, DC, while speaking to US broadcaster CNN’s Anderson Cooper said the suggestion that cancer was found after Princess Kate underwent a major surgery did not add up from a medical point of view.

Reiner said that when people undergo any extensive surgery then they typically do not go for any more ‘exploratory surgery’ and whatever the ailment is can be confirmed via pathological tests and imaging.

Kate Middleton said that the tests that were conducted after the operation found she was suffering from cancer.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventive chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” Kate Middleton said in her announcement video where she told the world she was diagnosed with cancer.

“When people undergo extensive surgery, they don’t go in typically for any more ‘exploratory surgery’, all these operations are preceded by extensive imaging like CAT scans and MRIs. So the surgical team would have a very good understanding of what was likely to be the problem and that would be confirmed by pathology,” Reiner said.

It is worth noting that the Kensington Palace last week (January 17) dismissed reports of Kate Middleton receiving treatment for cancer. Kensington Palace confirmed that Princess Kate does not have cancer and is not undergoing treatment for it, according to a report by The Mirror US.

Reiner further explained that a piece of the tissue is sent to the pathology lab during the surgery and the extent of the actual operation will then depend on the diagnosis. “So, a piece of the tissue is removed… That goes directly to the pathology lab often during the surgery and sometimes whether something’s cancer or not will dictate the extent of the actual operation,” he explained.

“So, it’s very likely that the surgical team knew or had a good sense of what this was going to be prior to surgery, and that was confirmed at the time of pathologic testing during the operation. So this is something that would have at least been suspected before and confirmed during the operation,” he further added.

The announcement by the Kensington Palace where they deny Kate is suffering from and the video released where she reveals she is undergoing treatment has also fuelled controversy.

Meanwhile, a section of social media users are claiming that the video of Kate Middleton could have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

Many observers on the internet are claiming that the video could be doctored while citing the recent controversies regarding two photographs released by the Kensington Palace which it later accepted were doctors as concerns grew about Kate’s whereabouts.
