Charlton credited a mental reset as she stole the show with a blistering 7.65 seconds to win the hurdles.

Devynne Charlton broke the 60m hurdles world record for the second time in the space of a month to become the world indoor champion on Sunday (3 March).

The Bahamian, whose country’s population of 400,000 is less than a quarter of the size of the Glasgow City region in which the World Athletics Indoors Championships was taking place, took 0.02 off the world record she set last month in New York.

Tia Jones matched that time at the United States nationals days later, but Charlton now stands alone after her blistering run in Scotland.

France’s Cyrena Samba-Mayela, the defending champion from Belgrade 2022, this time secured silver in 7.74 with bronze going to Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (7.79).

“This mean a whole lot because I have set myself goals,” said Charlton afterwards. “I have not changed my technique much – just a few tweaks – but I have been working hard off the track – making sure my mental health is good and working with a sports psychologist. Just taking care of myself.”

With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games less than five months away, Charlton’s hot streak is coming at just the right time.
