US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun on April 16 for the first time after nearly 18 months. The video conference between the two defence ministers came after a war of words earlier in the month over a US-led naval drill in the disputed South China Sea. US President Joe Biden had also hosted his counterparts from Japan and Philippines on April 11 much to China’s displeasure. However, the US also wants to maintain lines of communication with Beijing to prevent tensions from spiralling out of control. Just hours after the conversation between Austin and Dong, China scrambled jets to war US naval aircraft that flew over Taiwan Strait. Watch the video to find out more.
