Dr P Veeramuthuvel, a leading scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the project director for the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission has generously donated Rs 25 lakh, a sum equal to two years of his salary, which he received as prize money.
“I couldn’t accept this substantial award money in good conscience, so making a donation seemed like the most fitting choice,” stated Dr. Veeramuthuvel. The Tamil Nadu government rewarded him as a gesture of recognition for his pivotal role in the successful lunar rover landing, with eight members of his core team also receiving the same reward.
Despite shouldering the responsibility of a Rs 72 lakh home loan, Veeramuthuvel opted to contribute the entire amount to institutions that played a pivotal role in his scientific journey. As a result, he made donations to the alumni associations of Elumalai Polytechnic College in West Tambaram, Chennai; the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Tiruchirapalli; Sri Sairam Engineering College; and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai.

According to reports, he highlighted the fulfilling nature of contributing to national development in the enriching environment provided by ISRO.
Dr. Veeramuthuvel highlighted his dedication, stating that he devoted four consecutive years to the Chandrayaan-3 mission without taking a single vacation or holiday. This commitment resulted in India becoming the fourth country, following the US, erstwhile Soviet Union, and China, to achieve a soft landing on the Moon’s surface. The historic landing was documented on August 23.
Moreover, Dr. Veeramuthuvel revealed his rigorous work schedule, stating that he dedicated at least 80 hours per week continuously for four years, from 2019 to 2023, to accomplish the Herculean task of a successful soft landing on the Moon. His commitment is particularly noteworthy in light of recent discussions sparked by Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy, who suggested that young people should aim for 70 hours of work per week, fueling a broader debate on work hours and productivity.
