Sony’s latest mixed-reality headset will be solely targeted at developers working on 3D production software.

Sony has unveiled a new mixed-reality headset at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show, and it is intended for the creation of 3D content. This announcement comes just as Apple has finally announced a release date for its own mixed-reality system, the Apple Vision Pro.

The headset, developed in collaboration with Siemens, is equipped with an XR head-mounted display featuring 4K OLED microdisplays. It also supports see-through functionality and includes a pair of controllers that are useful for interacting with 3D objects.

It is important to note that Sony already has a VR gaming system, the PlayStation VR2 for the PS5 console. However, the new mixed-reality counterpart will be solely targeted at developers working on 3D production software, and in doing so, it may draw Apple’s target customers in its own way.

Sony Mixed-Reality Headset Features

Sony notes that this system comes with Sony’s proprietary rendering technology, and this “enables real-time, high-definition and realistic rendering of textures of 3D objects and facial expressions of human characters.” The headset also features a video see-through function and spatial recognition with six cameras and sensors.

In order to control it, the system features a ring controller that can be used to interact with objects in a virtual space, and another pointing controller that enables precise pointing.

Coming to the specifications, the headset is powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 SoC, which is also the same chipset that could be used to power the rumoured Samsung headset.

Sony Mixed-Reality Headset Price And Availability

Sony says that the headset system will be available “later in 2024,” and more details about specs, launch date, launch regions, pricing, and software compatibility will be revealed later as well.

With that said, a bunch of companies are hopping on the mixed-reality train, which was initially started by Meta—with its Quest lineup of headsets. Other manufacturers like Samsung are also expected to release their own headsets to compete in this rapidly expanding space driven by Apple and Meta.
