Manchester United squandered a two-goal lead to salvage a point against Galatasaray in the Champions League last night. The 3-3 draw in Istanbul left Manchester United at the bottom of the Group A standings in the Champions League.

Amid the heartbreaking and gloomy environment, one act of skipper Bruno Fernandes seems to have won the hearts of Manchester United fans. Fernandes has often been criticised for lacking leadership skills at Old Trafford but his cool head conduct on the field yesterday earned him immense praise. The incident took place in the initial phase of the Champions League tie after Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring.

Known for the hostile atmosphere, visiting teams often find it hard to gain an upper hand in Istanbul and Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was well aware of the away conditions. Before kick-off, the home fans even reportedly showcased a banner which read, “Welcome to Hell.”

Fernandes was visibly furious with Alejandro Garnacho’s gesture. Fernandes and other players even reportedly put their hands up in order to apologise. Garnacho’s antics also infuriated Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera who was seen confronting the Manchester United youngster. Fernandes was spoken to by match referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez as well.

It took seven more minutes for Manchester United to double their lead after Fernandes found the back of the net. The two-goal lead, however, did not last long as Galatasaray scored their opening goal of the night in the 29th minute. The Red Devils ended up conceding two more goals in the second half to claim one point from the fixture.

“It’s always me. I am responsible for this. We know we are in a project. We are making improvements, so that’s very hopeful. We are going in the right direction so I know we will be successful in the long-term, but if you want to stay in the Champions League you need to win these games,” Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag told TNT Sports, as per BBC.

In their next outing, Manchester United will be up against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday, December 3. Manchester United currently claim the sixth spot in the Premier League standings.
