Hyderabad woman murdered in Australia, husband confesses. MLA seeks help to repatriate her remains. Police treating death as suspicious

Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay received a call from Australia’s Assistant Foreign Minister Tim Watts on Friday, expressing grief over the passing of an Indian-born woman whose body was found in a wheelie bin in a Melbourne suburb.

Watts conveyed sympathies over the death of 36-year-old Chaithanya Madhagani who was reportedly murdered in the city’s Point Cook area. During the call, the High Commissioner noted the family’s desire for the prompt repatriation of the deceased’s remains to Hyderabad.

‘Repatriation of mortal remains’

“High Commissioner flagged the desire of the family of the deceased for early repatriation of mortal remains. The Mission and CGI Melbourne remain in touch with the concerned,” the Indian mission in Australia said in a post on X. Chaithanya was allegedly killed by her husband last week who later flew to Hyderabad and handed over their child to her parents. The body of Chaithanya was found in a wheelie bin on the side of a road in Buckley on Saturday, according to reports. She was staying with her husband and son in Australia.

Earlier, a GoFundMe page was set up by a close friend of Madhagani to help raise money for her body to be taken back to India. On Sunday, Uppal MLA Bandari Lakshma Reddy told news agency PTI that at the request of the woman’s parents, he wrote a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to bring her mortal remains to Hyderabad. The MLA said he also informed the office of Union Minister G Kishan Reddy in this regard.

The woman’s husband flew to Hyderabad and handed over the child to his in-laws in Australia. The MLA further said that according to the information provided by her parents their son-in-law “confessed” to having killed their daughter. In an interview published on Thursday, Madhagani’s father told the Herald Sun about the family’s shock when their son-in-law turned up on their doorstep. “As soon as I put my hand on my grandson’s head, his father, Ashok, knelt, grasped my feet and started crying, saying ‘I am sorry for what I did, Chaithanya is no more, I killed her’,” the father said.
