Apple’s iOS 17.2 update, released today, brought a wave of new features like the Journal app and spatial video capture. However, amidst the new features, two eagerly anticipated features – AirPlay in hotels and collaborative playlists for AppleMusic – are conspicuously absent. Apple has officially confirmed their delay to 2024. On the iOS 17 webpage, Apple has confirmed that both these features will come with “an update in 2024”.So, it’s not clear when exactly will the two features come to iPhones.

What the two features will bring

AirPlay in hotels promised seamless media streaming from iPhones and iPads directly to hotel TVs, eliminating the need for fiddling with unfamiliar interfaces. “Securely and privately enjoy your content on the big screen in select hotels by simply scanning a unique QR code on the AirPlay-compatible TV in your room,” is how Apple describes the feature.
This feature, initially touted as a major convenience for travellers, is now pushed back, leaving users to rely on existing casting solutions or potentially archaic hotel systems.
Collaborative playlists for Apple Music, another highly-anticipated feature, aimed to change music sharing. Users can curate and listen to playlists with friends and family in real-time, each adding their favourite tracks to a shared musical journey. Furthermore, in Now Playing, you can use emoji to react to the song choices as well. iPhone users will have to wait for this feature as well.
Apple has remained tight-lipped about the specific reasons behind the delay. One reason why AirPlay has been delayed is perhaps due to technical challenges or integration issues with partners like hotels.
While AirPlay in hotels and collaborative playlists are on hold, iOS 17.2 still offers a slew of exciting features. Users can explore the new Journal app, delve into the immersive world of spatial video capture, and enjoy a host of other enhancements.
