Telecom major Bharti Airtel has announced that it will be the first network operator to offer connectivity at India’s first-ever under-water metro. This innovative metro service is set to start operating in Kolkata soon.
India’s first underwater metro which is set to be an engineering marvel will connect Howrah to Kolkata and is expected to be made available to the public soon.
The company noted that it has invested in the infrastructure ahead of the commercial launch of service, which is expected to start soon. This will make Airtel the first operator to deliver connectivity through the 4.8km stretch in Kolkata’s East – West Metro corridor that will connect Howrah Maidan with the Esplanade.

Airtel’s plans to offer network in under-water metro

To offer network connectivity to metro commuters, Airtel will deploy high-capacity nodes 35 meters below river Hooghly. The company has also connected the 4.8 km stretch between Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station, Mahakaran and Esplanade stations through fiber.

High-capacity nodes at each of these stations have been deployed for seamless connectivity allowing commuters to enjoy faster 5G speeds, uninterrupted voice calls and data transmission that enhance the daily commute experience and allow customers to stay connected and productive through their travel.
Commenting on network availability in under-water metro service in Kolkata, Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel West Bengal and Odisha said: “Airtel is committed to pushing boundaries to better serve its customers. This initiative to provide under-river tunnel connectivity will certainly make a difference to commuters where they will get access to High-Definition video streaming, gaming, multiple chatting, instant uploading of photos and more, along with enjoying the scenic stretch below river Ganga”.
