Ramachandran started working as an accountant after his graduation but he always had a desire to learn and wanted to do his business and make different products.

Moothedath Panjan Ramachandran, the inspiring founder and Chairman Emeritus of Jyothy Laboratories Limited, has become an example for countless aspiring entrepreneurs. His incredible journey began with a modest loan of Rs 5,000. With his sheer determination and sharp business sense, he transformed his venture into a multi-crore company.

Ramachandran’s story is a prime example of the power of hard work and perseverance, resonating with millions of young business enthusiasts.

Ramachandran embarked on his path to success after earning a B. Com degree from St Thomas College in Thrissur, Kerala. Despite starting his career as an accountant, his burning desire to create unique products and run his own business never wavered. He set his sights on developing a fabric whitener but initially faced failures during his kitchen experiments.

A turning point arrived when he stumbled upon a chemical industry magazine suggesting that purple dyes could revolutionize textile manufacturing by achieving the whitest and brightest colours possible. Ramachandran wholeheartedly embraced this idea, dedicating a year to experimenting with purple dyes.

In 1983, armed with a Rs 5,000 loan from his brother, Ramachandran established a temporary factory on a small portion of his family’s land in Thrissur, Kerala. The company was named Jyothy Laboratories, an homage to his daughter Jyothy. His vision was to address the growing consumer demand for brighter and whiter fabrics, leading to the creation of the iconic Ujala Supreme Liquid Fabric Whitener.

Initially, a group of six women began selling the product door-to-door. Over time, the demand for Ujala grew, expanding its presence in South India. By 1997, the product had reached consumers across India.

What started as a single-product enterprise transformed into a multi-brand firm as Jyothy Labs diversified its product line. The company ventured into various FMCG categories, including air care, detergents, mosquito repellents, and fabric enhancers. In a strategic move, Jyothy Labs acquired the German company Henkel Ltd., further strengthening its market presence. As of now, the company boasts a market capitalization of Rs 13,583 crore.

In 2020, MP Ramachandran retired from the post of Managing Director, appointing his eldest daughter, MR Jyothy, as his successor.
