Zhang Yiming is the billionaire founder behind the tech juggernaut ByteDance, which oversees popular platforms like TikTok and Douyin. According to a report by South China Morning Post, Yiming has requested the removal of a stone tablet in his honor from a village in his home province.
The tablet praises Yiming as a “spiritual idol” for young entrepreneurs and commemorating his philanthropic donation of 2 million yuan (US$280,000) to an ancestral temple in Kongfu Village, Fujian province. There were images of the stone tablet that were circulating on Chinese social media platforms, claims the report.
iFeng.cc, supported by Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV, revealed that the stone tablet, a customary way of recognising significant contributions, had been recently taken down. Additionally, Leiphone.com, a prominent Chinese technology news outlet, disclosed that Yiming personally intervened in requesting the removal, noted the report. So it’s not clear whether the tablet has been removed or not as contradictory reports have emerged about its existence.

The tablet, adorned with inscriptions lauding ByteDance’s pioneering application of artificial intelligence in mobile internet and Douyin’s trailblazing efforts in live-streaming commerce, also divulged personal details about Yiming’s family lineage.
Yiming has kept a low-profile for over two years now. He stepped down as chairman of ByteDance in 2021. While Yiming’s whereabouts have largely remained undisclosed, recent reports indicate his relocation overseas, primarily in Singapore, coinciding with the tenure of TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, who is also based in the city-state.
The billionaire was in news in May 2023 when local education authorities disclosed a substantial donation of 200 million yuan to an education fund in his hometown of Longyan, Fujian province.
