In June of this year, WhatsApp unveiled its Channels feature, resembling Instagram, in select regions. Now, under Meta‘s ownership, the platform has initiated the global rollout of this feature, including in India. WhatsApp asserts that Channels offer a straightforward, dependable, and private means to receive crucial updates from individuals and organisations within the WhatsApp environment.
What is WhatsApp Channels
Channels serve as a tool for one-way broadcasting, allowing administrators to send text messages, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. The company is developing a searchable directory to help users discover channels that match their interests. Within this directory, users can explore channels related to their hobbies, sports teams, updates from local authorities, and other topics. Furthermore, users have the option to join WhatsApp Channels by clicking on invitation links shared in chats, emails, or posted online.
WhatsApp Channels and its additional functionalities
Along with the WhatsApp Channels feature, the Meta-owned platform has also introduced some updates for a better user experience. These include:
* Enhanced Directory – Now, channels for you to follow are automatically sorted based on your country. Additionally, you can easily see new, highly active, and popular channels determined by follower count.
* Reactions – You have the option to use emojis for providing feedback and observe the total reaction count. The specific way you react will not be visible to your followers.
* Editing – In the near future, administrators will gain the ability to modify their Updates for a duration of up to 30 days before they are automatically deleted from our servers.
* Forwarding – Every time you forward an Update to chats or groups, it will contain a link back to the channel, allowing people to discover more information.
WhatsApp channels comes with 30-day expiry
“Similar to how we build messaging, we don’t believe Channel updates should have to stick around forever. So we’ll only store channel history on our servers for up to 30 days and we’ll add ways to make updates disappear even faster from follower’s devices,” the blog post says.
This means the content on your WhatsApp Channels will be available for a 30-day period, after which it will disappear automatically. Moreover, administrators will have the capability to block screenshots and message forwarding within their channel. WhatsApp Channels’ administrators possess the ability to choose subscribers and decide whether to list their channel in the directory for easy discovery.
