Maryam Nawaz said she has no desire for revenge and will work for the people while addressing the Punjab assembly after becoming the province’s first female CM.

Maryam Nawaz on Monday became the first woman chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province. She followed the footsteps of her father, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) supremo Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, who were both chief ministers of Pakistan’s most populated and prosperous province.

Maryam Nawaz won the elections after receiving the backing of 220 members in the provincial assembly.

This is the first time in Pakistan’s history and first time in 75 years that a woman rose to the highest office of Pakistan’s most populated province.

“I wanted the opposition to be present in this democratic process. I neither have a feeling of revenge or vengeance and my journey includes my arrest, my father’s arrest, my mother’s passing away,” Maryam said, extending an olive branch to the opposition.

“This is the honour of every mother, sister and daughter that a woman has been elected as the CM and I pray that the process continues and more women take my place as the leader of the house,” she further added.

“I am thankful that you have made me occupy the seat from where a visionary leader like Nawaz started his career [and] who later made Pakistan invincible with nuclear technology,” she said, referring to her father’s tenure as Punjab chief minister.

Maryam said she will usher reforms to make Punjab prosperous and help the business community attract investments.

“I desire to make Punjab an economic hub by empowering businessmen and we will provide a one-window solution for establishing and running businesses. We will facilitate the business community so that they can attract investment in the province,” the PML-N leader said.

In a move to gain more support from the masses as they navigate the economic crisis, she said she will launch discounted marketplaces as Ramadan approaches. She said she will launch Ramadan Sasta Bazaars across Lahore for the common people.

“(We) will establish Ramadan Sasta Bazaars across the province for the inflation-hit people. A body will regulate prices in the market so that no commodity is sold more than the fixed rates,” she said.

She also promised to bring changes to the healthcare and education sector of the Punjab province.
