A 33-year-old British base jumper died in Thailand after his parachute failed to open when he jumped from a high-rise building in the eastern beach resort of Pattaya, according to UK media reports.
Police were called to a 29-story apartment block on Saturday evening after eyewitnesses reported seeing a person crash through a tree and fall to the ground. Police said they found a blue parachute, which had not opened, on the man. The social media handles of the victim, identified as Nathy Odinson, suggest that he was an experienced parachutist.
Nathy’s brother revealed the “simple” mistake he made with his parachute that caused him to plunge to his death, UK’s Daily Mail reported. Ed Harrison, 39, has said chilling video footage of the Nathy’s last moments shows that his pilot chute was entangled in his harness, leaving “no chance” for it to deploy.
The building staff said the man had got to the top floor with friends who were filming him, reports said. This sport, which involves jumping with a parachute from high landmarks, has become increasingly popular among foreigners living in Southeast Asia.
Only a handful make a living from the social media attention generated by daredevil videos. However, with just a few seconds before impact, there is little room for error, and the activity carries a higher fatality rate than skydiving.
Last March, a British man died after base jumping in southeast France, BBC reported. “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand,” a UK Foreign Office spokesperson said on Sunday.
