Packaged Spices In India:

Consumers in India have expressed concern when packaged spices manufactured by MDH and Everest Group were found to have cancer-causing substances in Hong Kong and Singapore. These spices were found to contain ethylene oxide, a pesticide classed as a ‘Group 1 carcinogen’ by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Following that, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is said to have ordered quality inspections on MDH and Everest Group products. This has raised concerns among Indian customers, who have repeatedly expressed their concerns about unsafe food and an increase in cancer cases.

EVM-VVPAT Case:

On April 24, the Supreme Court ruled that it is not the dominant body for elections and cannot dictate how the Election Commission of India (ECI), a constitutional authority, should operate. The Supreme Court’s remarks came as it heard petitions seeking instructions on 100 per cent cross-checking of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) data against Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) records. The court has yet to render its decision. The Supreme Court’s comments came hours after it addressed a series of questions to the ECI about the operation of EVMs and VVPAT.

NIA Arrests Accused in London Indian High Commission Attack Case:

On April 25, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) made a significant breakthrough by arresting a key accused in a case involving the March 2017 attack on the Indian High Commission in London. Inderpal Singh Gaba, a resident of Hounslow in the United Kingdom, was detained for engaging in unlawful acts during pro-Khalistani protests in London on March 22, 2023, according to an agency statement. So far, NIA investigations into the case have revealed that the March 19 and 22 incidents in London last year were part of a bigger conspiracy to launch brutal attacks against Indian missions and officials.

India’s Lightest Bulletproof Jacket:

According to an official announcement issued on April 23, a unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully created the country’s lightest bulletproof jacket for protection against the highest threat level 6. As per a statement provided by the Ministry of Defence, this jacket is based on a revolutionary design approach that incorporates fresh materials and methods. The jacket’s front hard armour panel (HAP) can withstand multiple impacts (six shots) with 7.62×54 R API sniper rounds in both ICW (in conjunction with) and standalone designs, the statement adds.

D Gukesh Becomes Youngest Candidate Chess Winner:

Grandmaster D Gukesh, 17, made history as the youngest man to win the renowned Candidates tournament. The victory qualifies Gukesh to face defending world champion Ding Liren of China in the fourth quarter of the year. Gukesh earned nine out of a potential 14 points after drawing his final-round match against American Hikaru Nakamura. He became only the second Indian to win the Candidates, behind the legendary Viswanathan Anand.
